Job Title: Tutor (Science)

Location: Secondary School in the Southwark Borough

Contract Type: Part-Time Monday and Friday 14 - 16 phr enhanced DBS required

Reports To: Head of Science Department or Academic Coordinator

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Subject Tutoring:
    • Provide academic support and tutoring to students across all three science strands: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
    • Deliver tailored lessons to address individual learning needs and enhance understanding of scientific concepts.
  2. Curriculum Alignment:
    • Align tutoring sessions with the school curriculum, ensuring that the content covered is relevant to students' coursework and examination requirements.
  3. Student Assessment:
    • Conduct regular assessments to gauge students' understanding and progress in science subjects.
    • Provide feedback on students' strengths and areas for improvement, guiding them towards academic success.
  4. Exam Preparation:
    • Prepare students for internal and external examinations, including GCSEs and other standardized tests.
    • Develop exam strategies, review past papers, and provide exam techniques to enhance students' confidence and performance.
  5. Homework Assistance:
    • Assist students with homework assignments, projects, and laboratory reports related to science subjects.
    • Provide guidance on research methods, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  6. Individualized Support:
    • Identify learning barriers and challenges faced by students, and develop strategies to address them.
    • Offer additional support to students with special educational needs (SEN) or those requiring extra assistance in science subjects.
  7. Progress Tracking:
    • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance, academic progress, and performance in tutoring sessions.
    • Collaborate with school staff to track students' overall progress and provide regular updates to parents/guardians.
  8. Communication:
    • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and school staff regarding students' academic progress and any concerns or achievements.
  9. Professional Development:
    • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance tutoring skills, subject knowledge, and teaching techniques.
    • Stay informed about developments in science education and best practices in tutoring.

Qualifications:

Degree in a relevant science discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related field).

Previous tutoring or teaching experience in science subjects is desirable.

Skills and Attributes:

Strong knowledge of science curriculum content and examination requirements.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping students succeed academically.

Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning styles.
