Job Summary

We are working with a leading highways term maintenance organisation who are looking for an Operative With LGV to join our Maintenance and Operations team. You will be working on the Essex Highways Integrated Services contract in partnership with Essex County Council.

Job Description

Reporting to the Supervisor, the role involves assisting in providing a first class service to our customers, completing a high standard of maintenance to the highway network, helping to ensure that all maintenance activities are delivered in accordance with the strategies and policies of the County Council and Essex Highways.  

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be necessary to ensure that all matters are dealt with in a courteous and helpful manner and customers are made fully aware of the services and standards the Council is able to deliver.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pothole repair and carriageway defect reinstatements.
  • Carriageway and footway patching and construction.
  • Drainage works, including laying pipes, resetting ironwork and gully / access chamber construction.
  • Kerbing works.
  • Installation of road signs and other small civil works.
  • Soft estate maintenance works (e.g. grass cutting, strimming, etc)
  • Traffic Management operations.
  • The post holder will be required to participate in out-of-hours winter maintenance and emergency response activities on a rota basis, which will sometimes involve working unsociable hours, weekends and public holidays.

About You

  • A current, valid driving licence is essential, with LGV Class 2 entitlement highly desirable.
  • New Roads and Streetworks or NHSS 12 training and qualifications would be highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of highways maintenance.
  • A good understanding of health and safety and its impact on the workplace.
  • Ability to work safely and productively with minimum supervision.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with customers both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrable awareness of environmental aspects and impacts and waste management.
  • Willing to work flexible hours and overtime when required.
