Principal Mechanical Engineer - Building Services.

We are looking to recruit a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join client's Birmingham Industry & Buildings team, to become an integral member of their skilled Building Services team and assist with their growing workload.

You will manage and deliver a range of projects from industrial and commercial clients.

Project responsibility will be varied from inception of defining a client's design brief to inspections, specifications, design, and management of projects.

You will be flexible, dynamic with the ability to assist in the development of their growing team.

This role requires someone with the ability to deliver quality, robust deliverables on time and within budget.

Projects cover a wide range of sectors including industrial, logistics, people buildings, food & beverage and automotive, including many more.

Main work area's will be:

Role objectives include:
  • Manage and deliver the mechanical building services work packages in multiple concurrent projects, either in the UK or internationally.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects.
  • Providing technical leadership, mentoring, and coaching to design engineers.
  • Promote and deliver the use of Sustainable and LZC technologies.
  • Leading energy in-use compliance and thermal analysis as required to comply with local mandatory standards.
  • Promote the implementation of digital, automation and parametric methods of design on projects.

Technical development and management of design projects:
  • Preparation of designs, from initial concepts through to detailed designs.
  • Production of design calculations including using 3D modelling software, checking, and reviewing of calculations produced by others.
  • Producing sketch drawings / details for drawing / modelling by others and complete checking and reviewing of these prior to issue.
  • Preparation of specifications, and assistance with contract documents.
  • Carry out inspections and surveys, preparation of reports and reporting.

Commercial and management duties:
  • Assisting in proposal writing, marketing and business development as required.
  • Supporting the commercial and technical management of projects, ensuring that projects show a profitable result.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • A BEng (Hons) or MEng in Building Services / Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 5 - 10 years relevant working experience in mechanical design.
  • Achieved Chartered or Incorporated Status
  • Good knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction of relevant sector
  • Good understanding of the sector specific daily (operational) business of our clients.
  • An entrepreneurial, result oriented, proactive individual with a positive flexible and problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to perform best in a multidisciplinary team often with international colleagues.
  • You have excellent communication skills towards colleagues and clients.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of specialist mechanical building services design and modelling software including:

Autodesk Revit
MagiCAD/StabiCAD
ES Virtual Environment
NBS Create


Hours of work: Usual Office hours with flexibility around projects.

Salary: £55k - £70k (DOE) Negotiable.
