Position: Platform Engineer
Based in offices across the UK and overseas, the team is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and optimizing the infrastructure platforms underpinning the product portfolio.

Reporting to the PE UK Team Lead, the Platform Engineer will work in a team responsible for continuously optimizing infrastructure platforms, ensuring accurate cost capture and optimization. The infrastructure must meet business needs, be scalable, secure, and maintain high levels of availability.

The successful candidate will join an existing team of engineers in the UK and be part of the wider Technical Operations and Platform Engineering teams consisting of around eighty engineers based overseas the UK. Working with Customer Support teams, Technical Architects, and Application Developers, the Platform Engineer will play a crucial role in evolving the product portfolio into large-scale, high-margin, secure, and reliable digital assessment and e-marking services.

This role will require flexible working patterns to cover extended hours, which may include up to 10 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Responsibilities
Provide ongoing support of the infrastructure products and services, offering 4th line support for escalated tickets and requests. Identify root cause issues and work with the development team to drive product improvements.
Collaborate with technical architects, development leads, and project teams to ensure infrastructure and process changes align with best practices and a customer-led focus. Champion the adoption of DevOps processes and new technologies that enhance operations.
Ensure continual service improvement by challenging and updating tools, products, and skills associated with hosting and service delivery. Research industry best practices and contribute to the Continuous Service Improvement (CSI) programme within the Technical Operations team.
Represent Technical Operations in other CSI programmes, providing technical assistance and guidance as required.
Drive knowledge development throughout the team to ensure operational knowledge and skills are widely shared.

Experience
Essential:

Excellent time management skills: ability to understand business impact and prioritize tasks accordingly.

Proven problem-solving skills: ability to undertake complex root cause analysis and create customer-facing and internal reports and recommendations.
Strong working knowledge of core AWS services (including EC2, ECS, RDS, CloudFront) and/or core Azure services (including Windows VMs/IIS, AKS, SQL).
Good working knowledge of network configuration in AWS and/or Azure.
Proficiency with Gitlab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, Docker, Terraform, Bash, Packer, and Ansible.
Experience using and maintaining Terraform/Ansible scripts for building/deploying AWS and/or Azure environments.

Desirable:

Demonstrable customer service skills and ability to act as an escalation point.
Experience supporting internal and client-facing cloud-hosted applications.
Experience supporting production-grade environments in AWS and/or Azure.
Experience supporting Microsoft SQL and/or Postgres databases and writing complex queries.
