Job Description:

A leading engineering firm is seeking a Senior Project Controls Specialist to join our UK team. The successful candidate will play a crucial technical role in producing engineering deliverables related to power system Protection & Control (P&C) within the Transmission & Distribution sector. This role involves leading and supporting multi-disciplinary engineering teams, acting as a senior technical authority, and mentoring less experienced engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior technical authority on project-specific engineering teams, providing expertise in P&C engineering.
  • Support the growth and enhancement of the P&C Section's engineering capability in the UK, offering guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Lead the delivery of P&C engineering outputs, determining suitable personnel from global offices as required.
  • Undertake the role of Lead Project Engineer on design projects, especially for voltages from 132kV to 400kV.
  • Produce detailed substation P&C design packages, compliant with client and national standards (ENA/BS/IEC/IEEE).
  • Conduct power system studies (fault level and load flow) to determine protection settings and produce relay protection files.
  • Prepare calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation.
  • Execute complex assignments using advanced techniques, leading to new or improved processes and technologies.
  • Provide consultancy on FEED stage projects, including producing technical reports and presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and other legal requirements related to substation/P&C and electrical system design.
  • Perform technical quality assurance reviews and approve P&C designs and deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with other sections within the UK T&D Engineering Team for effective project execution.
  • Maintain compliance with internal design management standards, processes, and procedures.
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, and technical guidance to improve engineering capability within the P&C Section.
  • Plan and lead client meetings related to P&C, acting as Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) and TP141 Protection Setting Engineer as required.
  • Support project proposal preparation and tender presentations.
  • Drive a ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects and promote a culture of safety and technical excellence.
  • Understand and apply industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures across the asset lifecycle.
  • Maintain project compliance with the company’s UK Integrated Management System (IMS).
  • Act as an ambassador for the company, upholding high ethical and moral standards.
  • Support the professional development of less experienced engineers, including technical guidance and training recommendations.
  • Actively engage in marketing and business development activities, building client relationships and promoting the company brand.
  • Identify and support the development and recruitment of new talent within the team.
  • Contribute to industry professional bodies and groups, maintaining Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Assist in establishing policies, procedures, and strategic goals for the section.
  • Demonstrate creativity and judgment in problem-solving and advance P&C Section tools and workflows.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) with a minimum of 7 years of P&C engineering design experience in the electricity transmission & distribution sector, including at least 5 years on UK transmission system projects. OR

Master's degree in engineering (or related field) with 6 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge of engineering design management best practices.

Understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation, Environmental and Waste Management legislation, and CDM Regulations.

Experience in lead substation design roles on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects in the UK, including acting as TP137 CDAE and TP141 Protection Settings Engineer.

Familiarity with National Grid procedures and Technical Specifications.

Understanding of the causes and consequences of Impressed Voltage and procedural control of Temporary Works.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and CAD technology/software, with a strong understanding of BIM principles.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
