We are now recruiting for a C&I Manager to be involved in delivering an industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of nuclear power station.

What we’re looking for

As the C&I Manager, you will provide technical expertise across the lifecycle of C&I Systems for the SMR nuclear power plant. This covers the delivery of the complete design of the Control and Instrumentation systems, spanning system architecture, sub-system design and equipment specification and design / selection to realise the final verified design of the power station. You will do this by working closely with the engineering teams from across the power station and applying a structured systems engineering approach to design.

  • Support the Senior Manager - Process C&I & Data Processing and Control Systems, in delivery of the agreed programme of work.
  • Accountable for delivery of the Process C&I & Data Processing and Control Systems team’s scope of work.
  • Working with Process and Mechanical plant systems Engineers to translate high level requirements into a specification for Control and Instrumentation (C&I) systems.
  • Liaise with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components and systems to facilitate effective system design.
  • Assess and substantiate that the design specification meets the requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance against international standards in particular, IEC 61513, IEC61226 and IEC61508.
  • Produce verification and validation plans and define test plans to demonstrate that the C&I system requirements have been satisfied.
  • Support to planning and implementation of policies and procedures related to the life cycle of C&I systems.
  • Ensure that optimum solutions are provided for the RR SMR Nuclear Power Plant by supporting the procurement, operations, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
  • Contribute to the production of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent nuclear safety assessors.
  • Ensures that quality is maintained throughout the SMR project lifecycle by undertaking appropriate technical reviews and providing the required C&I engineering inputs to the project technical review gates.
  • Discusses the C&I system design with external organisations including the nuclear safety regulator, potential customers, and suppliers.
  • Manage staff, contract partners and packages of work with the supply chain.

Key selection criteria for this role are:

Comprehensive C&I System Design Proficiency
Deep knowledge and significant experience in the systematic design lifecycle of a C&I system including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of safety or process critical C&I systems. In particular, expertise in one and more subdisciplines i.e. control systems, protection systems and/or instrumentation is required for the role. This together with a good understanding of the principles of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (such as redundancy and diversity) would be beneficial.

Adherence to Industry Standards
Knowledge and experience of relevant industry standards for systems important to safety (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61226, IEC 61513).
Knowledge, understanding and practical experience of applying relevant regulations to a wide range of C&I systems.

Application of Advanced System Methodologies
Knowledge and experience of applying systems engineering methodologies including Model Based Systems Engineering to C&I systems.

Effective Stakeholder Communication
Experience in taking information, understanding, and presenting it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders. including regulatory bodies.

Technical Oversight Proficiency
Proven track record of providing technical leadership in C&I discipline with an ability to provide technical oversight of the work carried out by others i.e. discharging the intelligent customer role.



Training & Qualification Requirements

  • Hold a degree level qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, control systems, mechatronics, physics or computer science.
  • Applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience may also be considered.

Pay and Benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £57,600 - £75,600 (DOE) plus:-

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
  • Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
  • £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
