Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture. Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.

About the Role

As a payroll officer in a busy small team, your primary responsibility is to deliver a customer-focused, high-quality payroll service. This involves ensuring that all employees are paid accurately and on time, adhering to payroll schedules and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Your role requires meticulous data management to maintain accurate and confidential payroll records, utilizing payroll software to process transactions efficiently. Additionally, you will resolve payroll discrepancies promptly and provide clear support to employees with payroll-related queries, continuously seeking ways to improve processes and enhance overall efficiency.

Supporting the Teachers Pension administration is another crucial aspect of your role, where you will manage pension contributions accurately, ensuring both employee and employer contributions to the Teachers Pension Scheme (TPS) are correctly recorded and submitted on time. Staying informed about the TPS regulations is essential to ensure compliance and avoid legal or financial penalties. Effective communication is key, as you will act as a liaison between the organization and the TPS, informing employees about their pension options, benefits, and any changes to the scheme. Maintaining precise pension records and supporting the preparation for pension audits are also integral to your responsibilities.

Collaboration within the team and across departments is vital for the success of your role. You will work closely with other payroll and HR team members to coordinate efforts, share information, and assist with complex issues or peak workloads. This role requires you to support colleagues by sharing knowledge and contributing to cross-functional projects that involve Finance, HR, and IT departments, ensuring seamless payroll integration and streamlined processes. Participating in meetings and collaborative projects will help in fostering a cohesive working environment and achieving organizational goals efficiently.

At Haringey Council we are committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce so welcome applications from all ethnicities and communities so that we continue to make a difference to our residents and community. Our benefits package includes a leave entitlement of up to 31 days + bank holidays, potential hybrid working opportunities, health and wellbeing support, a generous local government pension scheme and a range of discount schemes across leisure and culture that provide both financial and money-saving discounts.

About You

We are seeking an excellent Payroll Officer who possesses up-to-date payroll knowledge and experience, along with strong data management and Excel skills. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in dealing with high-volume payrolls, ensuring accuracy and compliance with current regulations. Experience with Teachers Pensions is highly desirable, as this role involves managing contributions and maintaining accurate pension records. Excellent team working and communication skills are essential, as the position requires collaboration with colleagues across various departments to ensure seamless payroll processes.

Additionally, we prefer candidates who either hold a Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) qualification or are actively working towards it. This certification demonstrates a commitment to professional development and ensures the candidate is well-versed in the latest payroll practices and legislation. The successful candidate will bring a combination of technical expertise, attention to detail, and a collaborative spirit to our busy team, contributing to the delivery of a high-quality, customer-focused payroll service.
