Summary:
Our client are looking to appoint a Technical Director to spearhead company R&D operations  and product development processes within this global company leading their field in innovation and market share.

The Technical Director will take on high level strategic oversight of R&D activities with a view to deploy world class methodology and process optimisation within the departmental operations, seeking to offer strategy, process challenge, drive collaboration and sound technical leadership for the business

As Technical Director, you will hold overall responsibility for the delivery methodology of all new products to the business, working with and through established and deeply knowledgeable Technology Group leadership teams, you will work ‘on the process, not in it’, to deliver an agreed programme of projects on time, in full, to cost and specification, Ensuring effective utilisation of all company resources.

You will be able to foster strong collaborative relationships with key reports and other functions both in the UK and overseas to ensure expectations are aligned and best practice is adopted

This role is well suited to technical engineering professional, who has robust knowledge of R&D design and NPI processes within Matrix organisations as well as experience in deploying departmental optimisation programmes to utilise resource to its best effect, assessing current state, and deploying new working practices aligned to “world class” principles.  

The company have a robust product roadmap, are well funded in their operations and benefit from strong technical knowledge within their R&D operations. They are seeking to appoint someone capable of harnessing this and driving the department forward to realise its overall potential.

The Technical Director will be responsible for:
  • Challenge existing working practices with a view to identify ways to improve and innovate in the pursuit of an efficient and reduced time to market, with strong traceability and reduced risk,
  • Steer the overall R&D function to deliver their programmes of agreed technology on time, to cost and specification in line with company policy and procedures, ensuring they meet appropriate industry regulation and standards.
  • Build and co-ordinate collaboration across group R&D functions, leading the delivery of inter-business projects.
  • Set the technical strategies whilst ensuring alignment with the overall business goals as well as facilitating where needed overall group collaboration.
  • Innovate and implement new processes and adopt technologies that yield a competitive advantage, enabling innovation or facilitate further advancement in your departments.
  • Utilise stakeholder feedback to inform or highlight areas to drive improvement.
  • Develop strong partnerships as necessary with suppliers in the pursuit of collaboration against overarching projects.
  • Develop and implement ongoing training programs for staff

The Candidate

  • Proven in a leadership role driving R&D operations at a strategic level
  • Demonstrable exposure to driving change within departments through the adoption of project management methodologies and IT systems that enhance R&D delivery process.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fast paced R&D design process and ongoing engineering change as well as NPI considerations with a good appreciation of fundamental engineering principles.
  • Commercial acumen, with the ability to balance priorities in line with impact and efficacy whilst aligning to broader business need and benefit.
  • Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills, with effective decision-making skills
  • Capable collaborator – ideally with good exposure to domestica nd international operations and managing stakeholders across multiple facilities.
  • Engaging demeanour, and strong team player with excellent communication and networking skills and the ability to influence and motivate.

This role is newly created within the organisation and will serve to embed best practice for the department and broader business, providing a sound platform to sustain their ongoing journey of innovation in the sector.
