Our client is hiring an experienced Principal Civil Design Engineer to join their exceptional Rail team in London!

The role:

You will undertake and supervise the design of complex structural renewal and maintenance projects from inception to design completion as well as assist in delivering competitive tenders for new project wins.

This position has real potential to progress, experienced candidates could be looking at something more senior than Principal level!

This includes:

  • Analyse project remits in conjunction with the client and determine action plans for resolving project specifications, progress, and implementation, considering fiscal and business objectives.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in ensuring that the group prepares detailed designs, drawings, plans, programmes, and specifications (including procuring quantity surveying support) for all projects.
  • Identify and determine requisite in-house managerial/technical resources or procure consultancy support where needed.
  • Ensure the design group determines the scope of site surveys and implements them to support the production of outline schemes/options/estimates/financial submissions for cost-effective decisions.
  • Support and undertake the preparation of financial submissions as projects proceed, recommend and implement corrective action in light of emerging results.
  • Ensure the design groups monitor (both in-house and on-site) and report on project progress achievement; analyse financial consequences and justify the course of action, implement following endorsement.
  • Ensure all work undertaken is valued correctly and billed promptly to allow full recovery of resources.
  • Implement the project safety strategy, monitor execution, and determine/implement adjustments where identified.
  • Take part in tender review meetings and ensure that tender submissions are analysed, and that the technical and safety content is satisfactory.
  • Direct others on the methods of construction envisaged and organise the selection of subcontractors.
  • Ensure an effective and organised team.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records with successful audits.

Ideal candidate:

  • Chartered Engineer and Member of the ICE (or IStructE) essential with railway experience plus proven management ability in relation to contract administration and control, financial analysis and control
  • Knowledge of Network Rail contracts and other contract forms, contract procedures, Railway Standard Specifications
  • Practical knowledge of safety regulations
  • Capable of managing the delivery of technical projects, or parts thereof, allocated providing monthly update of progress for client report
  • Minimum 10 years of experience
