Configuration Manager from any complex engineering background – Rail, aerospace, defence, nuclear but not IT are required to work directly for the client organisation who is responsible for building and operating the UK’s New High Speed Rail Network, the role reports to the Senior Configuration Manager part of a Configuration Management & Technical Change team of 13 that sits within the System Integration department in the Central engineering function.

Overview of Role:

The Configuration Manager will coordinate change to technical requirements and technical baselines across HS2 construction contracts (Main works Civils, Stations, Railway System Contracts). To progressively verify and validate the evidence submitted by the respective contracts and their Integrated Project Teams that sets out how those changes have been implemented and configured within the contracts.

Reporting to the Senior Configuration Manager you will be responsible for Configuration Management across a number of major construction contracts responsible for Baselines, technical change and answering any CM queries.

Future of HS2 & Phase 1

Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion has 10 years left to run and the Configuration Management Team will manage the baselines & technical change right the way through the life cycle of the project from Design, Construction through to Test and commissioning & Handover, and so this is a very safe long term role with excellent opportunities for progress both within the Config Team and the wider system integration department.

Working Situation

The office location is Birmingham they operate a flexible hybrid working model working 1 to 2 days in the office.  Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can. Flexitime and compressed hours on offer (36 hour working week)

Salaries

Birmingham       £60 – 64,197  + pen (6:12) + 25 hols (Mid-point £61,140)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To manage and coordinate the process of change to technical requirements and technical baselines across the delivery contracts.
  • To ensure the relevant approved technical change and configuration management processes are instructed to the respective supply chain by HS2
  • Facilitate user feedback on HS2 procedures to the relevant technical group/author thus supporting continuous improvement of HS2 Configuration Management ways of working.
  • Receive and maintain Configuration Status Reports (CSRs) submission from the supply chain.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders and third parties in managing the configuration of technical requirements/artifacts within respective contract areas.
  • To coach engineers working to provide evidence and satisfaction arguments in the importance and ultimate purpose of configuration management.

Candidate Criteria

Looking for Configuration Manager (Engineer or Controller) who has experience working on highly complex engineering projects open to Rail, Nuclear, Defence, Aerospace, etc but not IT.  Must have 2 or more years’ experience within configuration management, alongside excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

  • Ability to establish, clarify and communicate the importance of functional and non-functional requirements with others.
  • Competent in digital data and information analysis and trend reporting
  • Ability to support the Quantitative and qualitatively assessments of the performance of delivery organisations against objective requirements
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts.
  • Ability to review results and work with stakeholders to gain agreement on resultant issues.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of configuration management practices, techniques, standards, principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation methods.
  • Knowledge of working within a government contract environment 

Type of experience:

  • Experience of managing Requirements and the oversight and implementation of assurance processes on infrastructural projects.
  • Experience of liaising with contractors and designers.
  • Experience of multi-discipline, cross functional programmes
  • Experience of providing specialist advice to support others
