A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Head of Data to join the Pavers & Jones Bootmaker Head Office Team at Northminster Business Park, York. 

As Head of Data, you will lead the Pavers Data Strategy, including a strong approach to data governance alongside democratising our data and providing teams across the business with rich analytics and insight that drive decision making and result in incremental business benefit. You will lead and create the Data Strategy, collaborating with key partners across data engineering and stakeholders from all other business functions to achieve this.

You will challenge the current ways of working, championing the required data culture changes that are needed within the business  and look for ways to improve on Pavers’ goals and objectives through data. Steering and leading the team towards system consolidation of our current core data tooling, you will drive results by providing the business with a single source of truth that challenges business performance and assumptions and ultimately delivers a clear and strong ROI.

Key Responsibilities for our Head of Data

  • Lead Pavers Data Management Strategy - encompassing our approaches to data quality, data cataloguing, data lineage, master data management and reference data, data science and the role of AI in the business. You'll be accountable for continuously evolving Pavers’ data management strategy.
  • Transform our Data Management Team - lead a team of specialists and analysts that partner with business, engineering and architecture colleagues. Ensure that Pavers  have the right people, processes and technology in place to appropriately manage our critical data entities across their lifecycle from the point of definition and creation to archiving and destruction.
  • Establish the Data Team as a centre of 'Best Practice' - drive adoption of data management by design within the delivery lifecycle including Agile. The culture you help create will extend into training, education, and, above all, a sense of community around data management best practices.
  • Partner with and influence cross-functional teams - proactively collaborate with engineering and technology colleagues to influence embedding of data management best practice e.g., adoption of data quality rules. Partner with data governance colleagues and data owners from across the business to identify critical data sets and agree appropriate controls linked to business value and data risk mitigation. Work with tooling teams ensuring data management. tools meet business and policy requirements.
  • Champion data management best practice - engage with our executive, market, and technology leadership across all areas of data management, including articulating the impacts of key quality issues and creating compelling business cases for these to be remediated at source. Advocate the benefits of good data management practices and educate colleagues at all levels in Pavers and across business and technology teams to drive adoption of data management controls and tooling.
  • Establish  a robust data quality issue management process - lead teams in determining root cause of key data issues impacting the business supported by best-in-class issue management process and tooling. Support business and technology team in remediating data quality issues. 
  • Drive the embedding of policy across the business and deliver improvements in quality of our critical data sets through measurement and governance.
  • Manage our third-party data providers relationships, ensuring we secure the correct usage and commercial terms from them.
  • Bring rigour and structure to data management planning with a clear data management blueprint for the future. Create and own a phased roadmap which incrementally and efficiently enhances our data management technology, working with peers across architecture and engineering teams to ensure alignment. You will appropriately prioritise plans based on business value and data risk, coordinating across Pavers. Put simply, you're the glue that ensures we're clear where we're going and that we're organised in the right way to get there.
  • Stay close to market and emerging trends to support improvement and innovation, ensuring we understand advances in data management approaches and tooling, as well as their applications across Pavers.
  • Build a culture of data literacy, enabling and empowering users to make data-informed decisions that drive business performance, innovation, protecting sensitive data and improving decision making.

About you

  • Results driven track record demonstrating  relevant experience in data management, and leadership roles, having led complex initiatives from inception to successful execution to create value for businesses and customers across complex organisations.
  • Ability to build strong relationships quickly, both internally to cut through complexity for the team and with key external partners to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes. Expertise in uniting people across all business levels, adapting leadership styles to motivate diverse team members within a matrix organisation.
  • Experience of data management tooling, you will be proficient in data management technologies and advancements, understanding capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses, especially in a Google Cloud environment, including demonstrable ability to credibly engage with and influence technical teams.
  • Practical experience in bringing data management to life through a clear and compelling vision, driving the strategic execution of plans. Well-versed in data management and data governance disciplines, particularly data quality, data cataloguing, metadata management, data lineage, master data management and reference data. Experience in data modelling within the media and communications industry is also beneficial.
  • Credible leader with strong values, impeccable integrity, and an instinct for making sound decisions. Impressive record in defining and implementing best-in-class data strategies, accompanied by first-class communication skills and an ability to translate technical complexity into business impact and value.
  • A background in program management for data-centric initiatives, utilizing both agile and non-agile delivery practices. Proficient in running and supporting executive steering groups, ensuring clear updates and top-quality decision-making through thoughtful preparation and follow-up. 
  • Infectious positivity , with a consistent positive energy that builds belief and motivates the team. Proactive, tenacious, and accountable in achieving results; demonstrating resilience and the ability to perform under pressure.
