GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our client schools as SEN Teaching Assistants with a special focus on supporting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for the upcoming September 2024 term. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of students with additional needs while gaining invaluable experience in a supportive educational environment.

Job Summary: As an SEN Teaching Assistant with a specialist in ASD, you will work closely with the SENCO and classroom teachers to provide tailored support to students on the autism spectrum. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting in the development and implementation of personalised learning strategies, helping students to engage with the curriculum, and fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

SEN Teaching Assistant – ASD Specialist Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning and delivery of lessons that cater to the individual needs of students with ASD.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to help students achieve their academic and personal development goals.
  • Assist in the creation and adaptation of learning materials that align with each student's specific needs.
  • Monitor and document student progress, working closely with the SENCO to adjust support strategies as needed.
  • Implement behavioural management techniques in line with the school’s policies to ensure a supportive and safe learning environment.
  • Support students in developing social skills and managing sensory sensitivities.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
  • Help facilitate a smooth transition for students between different activities or learning environments throughout the school day.

The Essential Requirements for a Successful SEN Teaching Assistant – ASD Specialist:

  • Experience working with children with ASD or other special educational needs is highly desirable.
  • A deep understanding of the challenges faced by students with ASD and a commitment to supporting their educational journey.
  • Patience, empathy, and strong communication skills are essential to building positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • The ability to adapt quickly to the changing needs of students and the dynamic school environment.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • An updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
