What does the role look like?

The Chief Stress Engineer will serve as the primary technical authority for all structural assessments of products at the Wolverhampton site. This role will also provide expert guidance to the broader stress engineering community across the Actuation Systems engineering sites, including those in the UK, France, Italy, the US, Poland, and India. The Chief Stress Engineer will be responsible for overseeing stress analysis, guiding decision-making processes for both new product designs and ongoing production support.

A critical aspect of this role involves leveraging simulation results alongside informed engineering judgments to drive sound engineering decisions. The Chief Stress Engineer will play a key role in supporting the business by addressing production challenges, contributing to new product development, and shaping the future product portfolio strategy.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

  • Lead and oversee all stress-related activities concerning the assessment of structural integrity and safety of aerospace systems, including comprehensive stress analyses such as static, fatigue, damage tolerance, and dynamic calculations.
  • Collaborate closely with design, systems, and manufacturing teams to ensure the seamless integration of stress analysis throughout the product development process—from initial design and development through to production and aftermarket support.
  • Serve as the delegated authority for stress signatures at the site, responsible for reviewing and approving drawings, engineering documentation, change proposals, customer deliverables, and concessions.
  • Conduct stress team skills assessments and drive strategic development initiatives, including the management of procedures and standard work practices to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with industry standards.

  • Problem-Solving: Proven ability to solve complex structural analysis problems and make informed, high-impact decisions under pressure.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to chair technical discussions, provide clear guidance on complex interdisciplinary issues, and inspire and influence the stress team.

Desirable skills:  

  • Educational Background: Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience: Over 15 years of experience in stress-related roles.
  • Customer Engagement: Experience in customer interaction, leading functional discussions, and overseeing deliverables approval.
  • Adaptability: Highly self-motivated, able to work independently, remain calm under pressure, and quickly adapt to changing business needs.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, able to effectively convey information to a wide range of audiences.
  • Integrity: Operates with the highest level of personal integrity.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • In-depth understanding of classical analysis methods, including mechanical components, classical stress methods, strength of materials, static and fatigue strength calculations.
  • Experience with software tools such as Abaqus, MathCAD, and Catia (gears-related background is a plus).
  • Detailed knowledge of structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA), including linear, contact, dynamic analysis, vibration analysis, and non-linear materials/plasticity analysis.
