About this client/child: Laura (11) is a happy, joyful and affectionate child. She lives with her Mum in SW11, and she really is a delight! She loves her Mum, being around people, being active, bouncing on her trampoline, and taking movement breaks to dance, sing and walk. She also enjoys sensory activities like bubbles, balloons and water play. She likes books, cooking, her Furby, and her iPad. Laura does not like loud noises, busy crowds, and not knowing what is happening next. Laura has a diagnosis of Angelman Syndrome, epilepsy, cortical visual impairment (CVI) and sensory processing disorder. Laura is mobile, though uses her wheelchair for longer distances. Laura is non-verbal and uses her low-tech book and Super Core/Grid 3 talker (iPad based) to support her communication. Laura’s Mum would like Laura to increase her use of her Super Core talker, and is happy to provide training, so that candidates will be confident to model using it, to support Laura to continue to develop her communication. Training will also be provided regarding Laura’s epilepsy.

Overview of role: Laura and her Mum are looking for a new Support Worker/Buddy who is lots of fun, to come and join them from October this year. The role involves all daily Nanny duties, meal prep, and domestic tasks related to Laura. The new Support Worker/Buddy will have some experience supporting a child with additional needs, and a great interest in communication. You will be happy to work collaboratively with Laura’s Mum and liaise with her educators. The role involves meeting Laura from school at her home, when she arrives on the school bus, and supporting her with her after-school routine, always promoting her independence and self-care skills. Laura loves spending time after school in Battersea Park and at Battersea Power station, where she likes to take a walk and play, to de-compress from the day. Laura has a great evening routine in place, consisting of dinner, time to relax and play, a bath and time with her Mum, and she likes to follow this routine each day.

Who this job would suit: This job will suit a dynamic, nurturing and playful Support Worker/Buddy, who is able to make Laura’s daily routine fun, as she loves to laugh, dance and play. Someone with some experience supporting children with special educational needs, and a great interest in communication. Someone who is also able to set boundaries. This will be an ideal role for someone with a background or interest in OT, SEN, or SALT therapy.

What’s great about this job: Laura is an absolute delight, and it will be a joy to work with her! Hours can be flexible for the right candidate. Additional training provided in Epilepsy and Super Core Communication technology. Paid holiday is generally in excess of 4 weeks.
