The Role

The Head of Flood Risk and Drainage will be integral to hand picking and leading a fresh and vibrant team within the flood risk engineering department, playing a key role in shaping the growth of the flood risk services that this client offers. You will be overseeing the planning, design, and implementation of flood risk management projects, developing strategic plans, ensuring technical excellence, and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. As the Head of Flood Risk and Drainage, you will play a crucial part in communicating complex technical information in a clear and accessible manner for presentation to stakeholders such as management, government agencies, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Grow and lead your own team of engineers and technical staff.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on flood risk assessments, modelling, and mitigation.
  • Review and approve technical reports, models, and analyses.
  • Oversee flood risk projects from planning through to execution.
  • Develop and implement effective flood mitigation strategies, including sustainable surface and foul water drainage designs.
  • Develop and manage resources and budgets for flood risk projects and initiatives.
  • Lead the organisation’s response to flood emergencies, coordinating with emergency services and other agencies.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Chartered status with ICE, CIWEM or similar professional body.
  • 10 years of experience in flood risk management with 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven ability of business development.
  • Excellent project management and organisational abilities.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of flood risk assessment and modelling techniques.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tool, i.e.:  
    • HEC-RAS, GIS
    • WinDES Micro Drainage/ Infoworks / Causeway or equivalent software packages
    • ArcGIS and AutoCAD applications
    • 3D earthworks modelling using PDS or similar
    • WINFAP-FEH and Flood Modeller software packages
  • Consultations with various authorities (e.g. Environment Agency) regarding flood risk and drainage design.
  • Input into CDM/Health and Safety/Environmental issues checklists.
  • Interpretation of geo-technical reports for drainage design.
  • Undertaking site walkovers/ assessments, surface water/SuDS and foul water drainage appraisals.
