Power Systems Engineer/Senior Power Systems Engineer

Join Our Dynamic Power Systems Team –  this role is based at one of our client's UK Power Systems hubs in London, Manchester, or Birmingham. Our client offers flexible working arrangements, allowing you to balance office and remote work, alongside a variety of other benefits.

Are you a skilled Power Systems Engineer ready for a new challenge? Do you want to work on high-impact projects around the globe? We're looking for an experienced Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our elite Power Systems team. This role offers the chance to engage in pioneering projects and influence the future of energy and infrastructure.

Our client is a leading global engineering consultancy renowned for its innovative and sustainable design solutions across a variety of sectors, including the built environment, transportation, and energy. With a history spanning over four decades, they operate from multiple offices worldwide, delivering comprehensive engineering services that encompass structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering. Their commitment to sustainability and excellence has earned them numerous industry accolades, making them a preferred partner for complex and high-profile projects. At our client, employees thrive in a collaborative and dynamic environment that fosters professional growth and encourages continuous learning and development.

Our client’s Power Systems Team is a hub of world-leading expertise in electrical engineering and HV power systems. They deliver specialist design and technical advisory services for complex, groundbreaking projects across the energy, industrial, and critical infrastructure sectors. Their work plays a pivotal role in shaping the pathway to a global net-zero energy strategy, presenting unique challenges that push boundaries and foster innovative thinking.

The engineers within the team operate across diverse domains, including T&D networks, substation design, renewable energy (PV, battery storage), and provide technical advisory services for a range of industrial clients. They also support a market-leading Critical Systems team with hyper-scale data centres and collaborate with Building Services teams on major construction projects. There is a strong emphasis on skill development and professional excellence in a proactive, collaborative environment.

What sets our client apart from industry peers is their integrated approach, seamlessly merging the often-de-coupled elements of power system design with simulation studies, all within a multi-disciplinary setting. This distinctive methodology allows them to excel in delivering high-quality solutions for complex and challenging projects.

The Role

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer with our client, you'll have the opportunity to tackle some of the most stimulating engineering projects worldwide. Your role will involve designing medium/high voltage power systems, utilizing industry-recognized software for analysis and validation, drafting detailed technical reports, and mentoring junior team members. You'll also be responsible for driving improvements in project delivery methods and managing the delivery of small to medium projects, leveraging your passion for accurate and innovative power systems design, along with your strong collaborative and problem-solving skills.

Joining our client’s team of experts will enhance your knowledge, contribute to their continued success, and advance your career.

Project Themes:

  • Substation Design: Contribute to pre-FEED/FEED design of grid substations and hyper-scale data center campuses (100MW+), with a focus on system design principles and equipment selection.
  • Grid Connections: Design grid interconnections for renewable energy projects, ensuring compliance with UK grid codes and regulations.
  • Technical Advisory: Act as an independent reviewer or owner’s engineer for data centers and utility clients, providing expert technical guidance.
  • Niche Projects: Engage in innovative protection and control designs, city master planning, and the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed engineering designs, calculations, and specifications using relevant technical software.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, specifications, drawings, schematics, and other design documents across different stages of project lifecycles.
  • Model complex networks and perform steady-state studies (load-flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash), dynamic/transient simulations, and harmonic analysis to validate and verify designs.
  • Define, refine, and lead the delivery of specific work packages assigned by the project lead, while coordinating input/workstreams from other disciplines as required.
  • Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior colleagues.
  • Communicate and collaborate professionally with stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and clients within a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  • Participate in and lead (where required) client and project meetings.
  • Identify and develop improvements in project delivery methodologies.

The Skills

  • Degree in Power Systems Engineering or a related field.
  • Chartered engineer (or working towards) with a recognized body.
  • Experience in an Electrical Engineering role within the power systems field, preferably in consultancy or with an OEM/equipment vendor, delivering grid substation or renewable projects.
  • Experience with UK DNO/TO design standards and requirements above 33kV.
  • Proven ability to produce design documentation such as schematic diagrams, fault and discrimination studies, specifications, and project reports.
  • Experience in one of the following at 33kV or above:
    • Substation Primary Design (FEED/Detailed)
    • Substation Secondary Design (FEED/Detailed)
    • HV Plant Design (FEED/Detailed)
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Skills
