Job Title: Design Manager

Working Hours: 39 Hours per week

Main Purpose of the Role:

To assist in the profitable engineering of the UK Sales and Projects Business, ensuring projects are designed in a cost-effective manner, as measured by management accounts.

Goals & Objectives:

Responsible for all aspects of engineering within the Sales and Projects business, accountable through the Head of Projects and Design for the successful completion of projects within budget.

Includes producing mechanical, electrical, and process engineering design packs for the design, build, commissioning, operation, and servicing of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Tri-generation plants (gas and diesel), Battery Energy Storage Schemes, and any future technologies.

Provide input and support throughout the full lifecycle of a project, from sales to service.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Engineering Design:

  1. Manage the daily operations and resources of a busy Design Department, comprising Electrical, Mechanical Design Engineers, and CAD Technicians, ensuring all deliverables are met within required timeframes.
  2. Collaborate with stakeholders, including customers, Project Managers, Engineers, commissioning teams, sales, supply chain, and production, to identify and plan requirements.
  3. Produce schedules for the department, ensuring works are programmed to meet deadlines.
  4. Identify skills gaps within the department and create plans to address them through mentoring, training, or external partners.
  5. Review and evolve departmental procedures and tools to maximise efficiency, ensuring compatibility with production, external partners, and clients.
  6. Maintain and update design and documentation standards for all product variations.
  7. Allocate resources to projects, ensuring deliverables are met, and stakeholders have a point of contact for design management.
  8. Develop conceptual designs into detailed designs that meet both functional and technical specifications, adding value to the business.
  9. Produce designs and specifications such as Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, Functional and Technical Specifications, schematics, and equipment schedules in line with contractual requirements.
  10. Design systems such as heat recovery, heat rejection, hot water, chilled water, steam, fuel, noise attenuation, and ventilation, using technical and safety assessments.
  11. Manage and evaluate supplier work, both on- and off-site, ensuring quality standards are met and sign-offs are aligned with project Quality Plans and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
  12. Be aware of the contractual requirements for all projects, producing cost-effective solutions.
  13. Manage and lead the safe design process, ensuring compliance with CDM, DSEAR, HAZOP, HAZID, OPMAN, SIL, and risk assessment studies.
  14. Provide technical support to the Project Manager during installation, commissioning, and testing phases, ensuring timely production of all necessary documentation.
  15. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to process problems.
  16. Attend site visits for technical and layout surveys.

Make operational and business decisions on a day-to-day basis.

Plan resources to achieve commercial and technical results.

Manage the profitability of designs.

Freedom to Act:

Make day-to-day decisions related to suppliers, customers, and contracts, ensuring tasks are managed to achieve deadlines while understanding business goals.

Dimensions:

  • Oversee the profitability and design of projects, ensuring on-time delivery in accordance with technical requirements.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction while achieving acceptable commercial results.
  • Manage the performance of the Design Department to achieve goals at the lowest operating cost.
  • Perform other duties as required by management.

Personnel Specification

Essential Criteria:

Qualifications:

Minimum qualification: Degree in an engineering discipline with 2 years' experience in a similar role, OR HND/C Level 3 qualification with 3 years' experience in a similar role, ideally focused on power generation.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • At least 2 years' experience in power generation, process engineering, electrical distribution, and building services.
  • Familiarity with pipework and ventilation design, CDM, and health & safety regulations.
  • Proven experience in managing technical aspects of energy projects.
  • Experience leading a team of Design Engineers.

Special Requirements:

Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional weekend and out-of-hours work.

Willingness to undertake mandatory in-house training.
