Client Overview - Design Manager:
Our client is a leading UK contractor delivering vital infrastructure projects across multiple sectors, including water, health, and transportation. They are seeking a Design Manager to lead the design function and manage a range of projects from tender through to construction completion. This role involves close collaboration with design partners, clients, and the project team to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions.
Purpose of the Role - Design Manager:
The Design Manager will manage and coordinate design activities for complex projects, ensuring that client expectations are met while applying value engineering principles to deliver high-quality outcomes. The successful candidate will work closely with design partners, subcontractors, and project teams, ensuring designs are buildable, cost-effective, and compliant with client standards.
Key Accountabilities - Design Manager:
- Lead the design function, coordinating both internal and external design teams on live projects.
- Develop relationships with design partners and subcontractors, ensuring performance and compliance with project requirements.
- Chair and minute design team meetings and workshops to address buildability and cost-effectiveness.
- Manage the design relationship between the client, subcontractors, and the professional team.
- Proactively manage risks, opportunities, and value engineering throughout the design phase.
- Ensure design deliverables meet procurement and construction requirements.
- Drive production and monitor KPIs to ensure the design process is efficient and effective.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing design functions on complex infrastructure projects.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proven ability to manage relationships with clients, subcontractors, and design partners.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and commercial awareness.
- Familiarity with MS Office and collaborative platforms.
- Knowledge of WIMES and other design standards.
- Degree in a relevant construction subject.
- Professionally qualified (C.Eng, MCIOB, desirable).
- Strong technical knowledge of construction and design processes.
- Experience with P6, Microsoft Project, or similar project management software (desirable).
- Competitive salary (£50,000 - £60,000 per annum).
