Are you an experienced Reactor Physicist with experience in Monte Carlo simulation?

Do you a proven background in mathematical and physical theory and its implementation in computational modelling software?

Would you be interested in joining a leading engineering contractor to help drive the development towards nuclear new small modular reactor designs (SMR)?

If the answer is yes, this could be the role for you, so read on and get in touch today to avoid missing out!

The Opportunity
Due to projects ramping up, our client is currently seeking an enthusiastic and innovative physicist, with experience of Monte Carlo simulation, to work in a variety of technical teams performing analysis work for a broad range of established and cutting-edge reactor designs and or clinical treatments.

This role will present excellent opportunities for the continual development of skills and experience in physics, particularly as applied to radiation transport, including nuclear engineering and medical applications; also, the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, and the teams responsible for their implementation.

The role
As a Senior Reactor Physicist, you will join a cutting-edge development team for simulation of Radiation Transport/ Reactor Physicist. This will involve methods and software development, to support the theoretical development of our software and nuclear data products, perform complex technical analyses, and deliver technical training.

The nuclear industry is moving away from traditional reactor designs towards new small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) designs, with improved safety features and lower build costs. The medical world is using new radiation therapies, such as proton beam therapy,  to treat complex cancers. These new concepts bring exciting new modelling challenges requiring the introduction of innovative new mathematics, physics, engineering and software engineering techniques.

This role will be based at our Dorchester office with the opportunity to travel to client sites, conferences and workshops etc. as required. Some home / remote working is also available, and consideration will also be given in respect to part time & flexible working hours.

Your duties and responsibilities will be
  • Developing underpinning mathematical and physical theories.
  • Performing complex analysis.
  • Delivering technical training courses to a specialist audience.
  • Working as a team to develop and refine theoretical models and computational simulations.
  • Presenting results at technical meetings and conferences (where appropriate).
  • Interfacing closely with the international academic research community.
  • Generating new business through interaction with international commercial customers.
You will have the following qualifications & experience
  • An undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or engineering, or any other subject with a strong mathematical component.
  • A strong background in mathematical and physical theory and its implementation in computational modelling software.
  • Programming skills in languages such as Fortran, Python or Java.
  • Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems and quickly absorb new technical skills.
  • Self-motivated, with a genuine passion for the field of radiation transport/ nuclear physics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
The setting for the role Risks and Hazards are in line with working on a nuclear licenced site. These can include, nuclear fuel, radiation, chemicals and gasses, high voltage equipment, moving vehicles, flammable materials, high pressure circuits, steam, high noise and vibration levels. A full site induction will be provided, and all safety requirements must be adhered to when entering the site.
