The role:

The post-holder will oversee all Medical Engineering Services across the Trust, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, and patient-focused services within the available budgets. They will work closely with Senior Managers, Heads of Department, Trust colleagues, and external organisations to ensure that National, Trust, and Divisional objectives are achieved.

The Medical Engineering team consists of c. 37 engineers situated across two main operational acute sites but providing a service to a further 50 locations across the county.

The responsibilities include the provision of technical expertise in medical equipment testing, calibration, maintenance, repair and replacement, collaborating with senior clinical staff and procurement teams to secure the best value for the Trust, while driving change and modernisation to achieve best practice standards in Medical Engineering Services. This includes advising professionals on all aspects of medical equipment, overseeing safety alerts through the Central Alerting System, and providing expert advice on the planning and operational delivery of medical equipment services for the Trust

Additionally, the postholder will need to deliver financial benefits through both operational efficiencies and development of private income generation; working with finance to achieve financial objectives through business analysis, insights and solutions.

Whilst Medical Engineering experience and knowledge is of benefit, the key attributes of the post holder are strong business management and departmental leadership skills of teams of engineers across multiple sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and management of medical engineering services across the organisation, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s strategic goals and high-quality outcomes for patient care.
  • Manage a team of engineers and technical staff providing guidance, support, and performance management. Conduct regular performance reviews, set clear objectives, and address conflicts or challenges constructively.
  • Drive change and modernisation of existing systems and processes to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Development of private income generation.
  • Oversee and support in-house engineering staff while managing relationships with external contractors, ensuring that all teams meet Trust expectations and contractual obligations.
  • Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing team, fostering professional growth and creating opportunities for skill advancement
  • Regularly review and update practices to comply with national and Trust-wide standards, ensuring that all processes and services adhere to current guidelines and best practices.
  • Drive measurable improvements in service delivery, demonstrating compliance with Trust, National, and ISO standards.
  • Develop and implement long-term strategies for medical equipment to support the Trust’s future goals and healthcare advancements.

Skills, experience:

  • Educated to Bachelor’s degree in Medical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, related Business Management field or related field or equivalent level of experience.
  • Expertise in the testing, maintenance, calibration, and procurement of medical equipment.
  • Strong experience in managing departmental budgets, financial planning, procurement processes, with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness
  • Ability to lead, develop, and manage a high-performing engineering team, providing guidance, support, and conflict resolution.
  • Proficient in managing large-scale engineering projects, from planning through implementation, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Excellent communication skills for liaising with diverse stakeholders, including technical teams, clinical staff, suppliers, and senior management.
  • Strong understanding of risk identification, mitigation strategies, and incident response in healthcare.
  • Strong focus on ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and maintaining a high level of safety and quality in medical device management.
