Posted 2 hours ago by Novus
Are you passionate about education and committed to helping learners unlock their full potential? Are you skilled in Reading, with a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those you teach? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!
We have a great opportunity to join our Education team as a Reading Specialist Tutor for Novus, our prison education provider at HMP&YOI Deerbolt offered on a permanent, full-time basis working 37 hrs per week.
At Novus we work with passion, care, and commitment to create the foundations for change.
For almost 30 years we have been helping men, women and children of all ages and abilities, in prison settings across England and Wales, to take new directions.
At Novus, we are now seeking a talented education professional to join our education team, working within HMP&YOI Deerbolt (Barnard Castle).
In this role, you will work and be supported by our amazing team of dedicated professionals to mentor our prisoners to develop their English reading and writing skills, which will in turn help them to secure future employment opportunities post-release. You will need patience, passion and understanding in your approach to our learners who want to learn and improve.
Working in a prison is different to a mainstream education facility. We work with a wide range of people in custody supporting them to make a difference to their lives. We operate with security at the forefront of what we do, so our class sizes are small to maximise supportive delivery. Working with our Prison Officer colleagues we have a team on hand to ensure that the support we offer runs smoothly. We always try to cater to a learner's individual needs and ensure we create a positive learner experience. Time will be given to planning and your local education manager is always on hand to provide support as and when needed. Delivery happens between Monday and Friday and weekends are strictly for rest and relaxation.

- Support the upskilling of education provider and HMPPS staff to raise aware of the needs of non and pre-entry readers and helping them to develop and implement strategies to support non and pre-entry readers to progress.
- Work with onsite libraries and other relevant partners to develop a whole prison approach to promote reading using a range of strategies including, but not limited to, book clubs, writers in residence, enrichment opportunities etc.
- Collect and collate data to be made available to the Governor, Head of Reducing Reoffending (HoRR), Head of Education, Work and Skills and the Learning and Skills Manager including but not limited to the number of non-readers in the establishment population, the number engaging with support, the progress made by these individuals and the number moving into and successfully completing relevant qualifications

- Qualification in delivery specialism (English/Reading)
Ideally you will want to be a part of a team which has at its core a focus on improving lives and enabling and equipping learners to develop, grow and be equipped for a life of work and success.
