Job Title:           Product Safety Engineer

Salary:               up to £62,110 per annum dependent on experience

Location:          Portsmouth, Chelmsford or Cowes

We currently have a vacancy to join one of the world’s leading, global defence, security and aerospace companies as a Product Safety Engineer. The preferred site to be based at is Portsmouth but both Chelmsford and Cowes will also be considered. Hybrid working is available- the expectation is that you will be on site 2 days per week. Flexible working hours are also available.

Their Product portfolio consists of a diverse range of highly complex state-of-the-art systems, from the latest Radar technology to underwater warfare assets containing OME products. The team you would become part of develop the arguments, from first principles of safety engineering, to ensure those products are ALARP and remain so through their entire life, compliant with relevant safety policies and standards. As a member of this team, you will be supporting the assurance cases of a product family in one of our sectors, either Radar, Underwater Warfare or Simulation and Training. In addition to assuring the products we develop you may also be responsible for the assurance of the test and support equipment used during the development, servicing and maintenance of them.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrating an understanding of how to assure products from the first principles of safety engineering
  • Supporting across our Underwater Weapons portfolio of Torpedoes, Mine Neutralisers and Autonomous Underwater Systems
  • Developing efficient yet effective safety arguments, often from first principles, for technically complex products
  • Providing credible advice and guidance to the project team on Product Safety matters, ensuring that safety considerations are an integral part of the design process, taking cognisance of the whole product lifecycle
  • Ensuring project compliance with applicable UK and international legislation in particular, but not limited to, compliance with DSA02-DMR and other Ministry of Defence procedures
  • Deploying the latest thinking from across industry and academia to support new cutting-edge work on the safety of future product designs, including active work moving into the Model Based Safety Assurance arena
  • Be expected to contribute to the Business’s policy and culture of continuous process improvement, in particular Safety process improvement initiatives

About You:

  • Hold Engineering/Systems/Safety degree or equivalent that supports or is working towards IEng  status;
  • Clear understanding of safety engineering & assurance principles
  • Knowledge of relevant safety legislation & standards
  • Experienced and qualified engineers from other disciplines who display the correct behaviours and have an understanding of safety engineering, will actively be considered for this role
  • An understanding of product development and delivery lifecycles
  • You will have an effective approach to maintaining business and product integrity coupled with the ability to communicate appropriately throughout the business and customer communities.
  • You will also have the ability to work efficiently to timescales, coordinating tasks where necessary, whilst building and maintaining positive relationships.

You must be eligible to apply for SC clearance and, therefore, must hold a British passport and have lived and worked in the UK for the past 5 years
