Handley James Chemical is excited to again, be retained by a global speciality chemical manufacturing business. With a true global presence including a site here in the UK, we are recruiting for an experienced HSE Manager to lead the HSE function and the continued development of the team(s) there in Halifax. The site is an Upper Tier COMAH facility with a strong existing senior leadership team.

The HSE Manager is a key member of the Site Management Team and is responsible for implementing and leading the HSE strategy for the site including compliance to all statutory and regulatory aspects of the operation.  You will provide expertise in areas such as legal compliance and risk management, along with coaching and mentoring the wider teams to deliver world class EHS performance. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and report HSE metrics and use them to drive improvement.
  • Develop, maintain and implement the Integrated Management System (IMS) and ensure all policies and procedures are up to date, compliant with all applicable laws and regulations and aligned to corporate requirements and guidelines.
  • Responsible for maintaining the ISO14001 standard and leading any external audits carried out by the HSE, EA and any other competent authorities
  • Works closely with all Departmental Managers and mentors and supports them to ensure high standards of H&S is embedded across all site functions and helps to identify HSE improvements.
  • Reviews projects, changes, and activities to ensure HSE issues are identified and addressed to the highest standards.
  • Support the site teams in developing COSHH assessments, SOP’s, risk assessments, hazard identification and rectification and HSE audits.  Participate in the carrying out of these activities.
  • Participates in investigations and helps identify corrective actions and improvements.
  • Ensure that health and safety is everyone’s responsibility and develop this culture across the site by producing, delivering and assessing HSE training, including behavioural safety training and initiatives.
  • Assists with the Management of Training and Competency on site and works with site teams to ensure programs are in place and maintained.
  • Manages Routine Occupational Health requirements for the site.
  • Manages the site waste program and works closely with Operational Managers to find ways of minimizing waste generation

The Candidate

  • NEBOSH or equivalent accreditation – a degree in HS/Engineering would be advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience working within a similar capacity within a chemical or associated manufacturing facility
  • Exceptional leadership and influential skills, can engage, mentor and work alongside people at all levels
  • Experience working within a high hazard environment i.e. COMAH, DSEAR, ATEX etc. (COMAH is a must)
  • You will have experience liaising with the relevant HSE regulatory bodies

This role will suit an engaging individual, one who is visible on site and is exceptional at building relationships and ensuring health and safety is priority number one.

In return our client is c£70,000pa basic salary negotiable doe, 10% bonus, 25 days holiday + bank holidays and benefits.
